Installing underfloor heating under parquet is a popular solution today, offering comfort and energy efficiency. However, it presents unique challenges for parquet installers and builders. Wood is a living material that reacts to changes in temperature and humidity, making it extremely important to choose the right materials and follow the correct installation process. Why is Underfloor Heating Under Parquet a Challenge?

The presence of underfloor heating under parquet alters the installation environment in several ways. Temperature fluctuations and dry air during the heating period can cause wood to shrink and expand, which in turn can lead to gaps, cracking of parquet boards, or even detachment. Therefore, it is critical to use an adhesive that can neutralize these stresses and ensure stable adhesion to the substrate even in more extreme conditions.

It is also important to remember the maximum surface temperatures. The parquet surface should never exceed 29°C. For most parquet types, multi-layer parquet is preferred due to its more stable construction regarding temperature changes. Some solid wood parquets are also suitable, but they require particularly careful installation and adherence to the temperature regime.

Wakol Solutions for Underfloor Heating and Parquet Installation

  • Wakol Z 645: Modern underfloor heating systems require a completely level subfloor. Wakol Z 645 is a leveling compound specifically designed for use on underheated floors, ensuring even heat distribution and preventing "hot spots".

Installation Process and Heating Startup

The lifespan of the parquet and the efficiency of the underfloor heating depend on correct installation and heating startup. Here are some important steps:

  • Subfloor Preparation: Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, grease-free, and sufficiently strong. If necessary, use Wakol Z 645 leveling compound and Wakol PU 280 primer as a moisture barrier.
  • Drying the Heating System: Before parquet installation, the underfloor heating must have undergone a drying program. Follow the heating system manufacturer's instructions for subfloor drying.
  • Parquet Acclimatization: Allow the parquet to acclimate to the room temperature and humidity (at least 48 hours), in unopened packages.
  • Bonding: Use Wakol's recommended elastic adhesive (e.g., Wakol MS 262 or Wakol MS 290) according to instructions, ensuring uniform and complete coverage.
  • Heating Startup After Installation: After parquet installation, the underfloor heating must be turned off for at least 7 days. Then, begin gradually increasing the heating temperature, by no more than 5°C per day, until the desired surface temperature is reached (not exceeding 29°C).
